TPP2 Tutorial 8 (with Alice Howard-Graham & Diana Harrison) *in person
Pre Tutorial Critical Reflection -
List 3 priorities below to discuss at your tutorial:
- Hypothetical Exhibition
- Photography ideas for this weeks photoshoot for digital portfolio
- General impressions of the work
During your Tutorial:
Brainstorming Photoshoot Ideas with Alice
- depth of field!!! Sample in the foreground, sample in the background
- Set up a couple of different sets (pebbles, concrete, white cube)
- Foam board and fine pins! Pin up the series in perfect orders/spacing and photograph it straight on
- Try cream card, black card and white card
- Don’t be afraid to use aids - if you want a fold to sit in certain place, tape it
- Make the most of the details - up close up shots - this can be great to emphasise the differences in processes
- The length in procion print and procion bleeding speak well to each other
- Explore the play between the samples in a dyed ground and the sample on natural linen
Hypothetical Exhibition Design General TPP2 Feedback
- When scaling up maybe stick to the square format- it lends itself to series display and works well in conversation with the longer lengths - almost as though the lengths represent the continuous and the square format represents to fragmented
- Emphasise and utilise the element of conversation and series that’s already present in your work - whether this is by using the same shape but changing the placement for example or by using the series to represent time or movement - take the samples where the procion has been discharged out to leave behind a bleeding shape - could this bleeding expand through the series
- Think about displaying the paper intaglio prints in fine black frames - remember you could make it an edition!
Hypothetical Exhibition Design
- Find a space and work to this as opposed to fabricating a space - maybe do a site visit - Alison Jaques studio in London is beautiful (2 rooms very simples) - this can help you record dimensions - get an ideas of light etc - it gives this project grounding rather than it being toooo hypothetical
- In terms of the writing - there can be a lot of the writing can be quite minimal- as a young artist - there is not a lot history behind you but what is interesting is the development of you and your practice
- Think about having an object area with tools, sketchbooks - an explanation of the how the work is made
- Think about layout and how it helps the reader understand / build narrative
- You want to increase their understanding as your go along , give them clues to let them in
- Think about how you show scale - your touchpoint slide - those drawings don’t look the size they are because of the hand - if something is huge - make sure it looks so
- Add making images, make sure you’re in some of them!
- photograph the back edges of the pigment and devoré samples - fine black edge is lovely!
- ento Black insect pins are great! - maybe tape the samples to the wall and have the tissue paper pinned far away
- Key things - scale, level display, dark and light - changes in tone are interesting!
- where are the information points?
- do you want to give away your process / studio / self? - people enjoy this!
- Really think about how you’re going to photograph things convincingly for this catalogue! - maybe separate the portfolio photographs from the exhibition catalogue photographs- two different styles
- Consider the purpose and the narrative what is the story you are wanted to tell
Post Tutorial Critical Reflection:
Personal comments
- I am feeling positive after both of these conversations, I feel confident in placing the final 4 weeks in this exhibition outcome- an I am excited about doing it.
Priorities/Tasks
- Schedule and organise a gallery visit to take photos - sketch a floor plan - get some rough dimensions
- Identity which elements of your work you want to use and build the narrative around - what do they say to each other and how do they work together
- Look through Dianas catalogues and photograph/scan sections you like for research
